Field Technician – Petroleum – Fort St. John, BC

Description:
- Collect oil & gas samples from various customer sites throughout North East BC
- Fulfil customer requirements regarding handling of these samples until delivery to analysis facility
- Work in a safe manner and follow all environmental requirements
- Extended overnight travel with many days away is a job requirement
- All training will be provided
Ideal candidate will have:
- High School Diploma required
- Experience in the oil industry a strong asset
- Good work ethic, listening skills, superior customer service, problem-solving, planning & organizing, mathematical ability, strong communication skills
- Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License with no more than 3 demerits on abstract
- Must be able and willing to work overtime
- Note: this is a contract position

DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for carrying analysis of environmental samples for inorganic analysis in accordance to departmental standard operating procedures and health and safety policies.
- Performs analyses with a LECO Carbon / Sulphur Analyser while following the SOP’s to ensure accuracy and quality of work.
- Understand and troubleshoot the analyses.
- Ensures that instruments and equipment are appropriately maintained.
- Meets quality specifications defined by the laboratory to meet client requirements.
- Prioritizes daily workload to accommodate due dates.
- Investigates problems, takes remedial action as required and identifies actions to prevent recurrence; maintains records.
- Reviews test results and when required, prepares reports.
- Participates in developing SOP’s and general work instructions.
- Provides suggestions to Supervisor on method improvement projects and performs work on these projects if deemed necessary.
- Provides supervisor/manager with updates on sample status including advance notification of any delays.
- Adheres to Maxxam Code of Ethics Policy.
- Supports and complies with all Maxxam policies, Quality System and Health & Safety program.
- Participates, when requested in lab and health and safety meetings.
- Participates, when requested in internal and external audits.
- Keeps work area clean, neat and organized.
- Maintains training records and relevant qualifications.
QUALIFICATIONS [Minimum Requirements]:
· Post secondary education through recognized college and university.
· Practical experience with the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting with a LECO Carbon / Sulphur Analyser.
· Must have basic chemistry knowledge for application in a laboratory setting.
· Must have strong computer skills.
· Must be organized & detail-oriented.
· Must be able to work independently or within a group.

- Lead and coordinate the day-to-day activities for a team of 3 Sample Entry Technicians.
- Provide support and training to Sample Entry Technicians; leading by example.
- Spend daily work hours approving incoming submissions, and performing all other core Sample Entry functions.
- Prepare weekly production reports and queries to help monitor the daily workload and efficiency.
- Provide feedback to Manager with regards to performance of individuals in the sample entry team, and develop action plans to ensure continuous growth in skills and technical expertise.
- Ensure all incoming jobs are completed on time and are accurate.
- Maintain adequate communication with the operation group, Customer Service team and all other relevant sections of organization to meet established TAT and customer expectations.
- Assist in developing innovative and proactive methods to ensure the team achieves core performance standards.
- Demonstrate refined problem solving, decision-making and conflict resolution skills along with ownership for all inquiries from internal/external customers.
- Responsible for helping Manager generate, maintain and update all WI’s and job profile for Sample Entry group
- Assist Manager in team meetings to share Corporate and Departmental information.
- Provide management representation and support for all team members and client escalations, regarding research and resolution of sensitive inquiries.
- Streamline departmental processes and procedures, ensure consistency and maximize efficiencies, while maintaining a focus on quality, innovation and continuous improvement.
- Ensures adherence to quality systems QA/QC, SOP's and external accreditation requirements
- Maintain sample entry area in a clean, safe and an organized manner.
- Represent the organization in a highly professional manner.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in a Sample Entry or related role within the laboratory.
- Excellent leadership, communication skills (both written and verbal), organizational skills and detailed orientated.
- Good computer skills e.g. MS Excel®, MS Outlook®, LIMs system.
- Energetic personality that can work independently in a multi tasking fast paced environment.
- Ability to effectively interact with colleagues and provide coaching and mentoring when needed.
